Pari Mahal, meaning "Palace of Fairies," is a historic Mughal-era monument perched atop the Zabarwan mountain range in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir.

Historical Significance

Constructed in the mid-17th century by Prince Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan, Pari Mahal was built upon the ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery. Dara Shikoh, known for his intellectual pursuits and Sufi inclinations, dedicated the structure to his spiritual mentor, Mullah Shah. The site served multiple purposes: as a residence, a center for scholarly learning, and an observatory for studying astronomy and astrology.
