Nishat Bagh

Design & Architecture

Nishat Bagh is an adaptation of the traditional Persian Chahar Bagh (four-part garden) layout, modified to suit the sloping topography of the Kashmir Valley. Instead of the typical central water source, the garden features a linear water channel that descends from the higher elevations, creating a cascading effect through its terraces.

Key features include:

  • Twelve Terraces: Symbolizing the twelve zodiac signs, each terrace is adorned with lush lawns, vibrant flowerbeds, and majestic Chinar trees.
  • Central Water Channel: A prominent watercourse runs through the center, embellished with fountains and pools, enhancing the garden's aesthetic appeal.
  • Zabarwan Mountains Backdrop: The garden offers panoramic views of the Dal Lake with the Zabarwan mountain range providing a stunning backdrop.

 Historical Anecdote

A popular tale recounts Emperor Shah Jahan's admiration for Nishat Bagh's beauty. It's said that upon visiting, he expressed his desire for the garden to Asif Khan. When Asif Khan didn't offer it, the emperor, in a display of imperial authority, ordered the water supply to be cut off. However, a loyal servant later restored the water flow, and Shah Jahan, impressed by this act of devotion, allowed the garden to flourish once more.
